PAM Booth

The Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia annual architecture student works exhibition 2019 (’paaswe19’), held from 2 to 6 Octorber 2019. The theme given by Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia was ‘Metamorphosis’, comprising a concept that showcases the evolution of facades with the times. The concept also represents the different stages of evolution in Malaysia architecture. In line with the theme, the structure built and uses a vertical linear concept, based on the diagrid system with local postmodernist architecture as a basis.

Metamorfosi in architecture is the change of form into different character, appearance, or condition which explores possibilities of transformation in context of lighting, spacing, body sound, and air flow (five basis).

Facciata is the frontage which sets the tone of building. In relation to brief, it can well manipulate with the five basis while imbues strong sculptural quality.

“M∞” is a hybridization of façade styles depicted from two local iconic modernism architectures across past and current period. Design intention of “M∞” incorporates how façade being redefined over the years, through positive conversion known as transformation, asseverating the theme of exhibition

Old Era

Adoption of "Kerawang" facade from Malaysian Houses of Parliament (1963) being exposed, implying period where facade designed as building skin attached to structural support, wrapped around provided building form.

Rotation

Simultaneous rotation of both vertical components resembles elapsed time, as well as the evolvement progress of local modernism architecture facade.

Current Era

Adoption of diamond geometry facade from Ilham Tower (2015) being exposed, implying period where facade integrated as structural support. Self-bracing diagrid structure enables flexible, column-free spaces, discovers new functionalities and possibilities of building form.

Regular box is extruded.

Extruded box is divided into two to strengthen the concept of two columns.

Kerawang facade is taken as infill of the volumes.

Diagonal exo-skeleton facade is taken as basis of structural foot-print.

The vertical components are stretched to create hierarchy and asymmetry.

The vertical components are rotated to enable transformation of form expressions.

Parliament Tower/ Kuala Lumpur (1963)

The design of the tower block resembles a pineapple with beehive-like 'kerawang' facade, implying period where facade designed as building skin attached to structural support, wrapped around to provide a building form.

Ilham Tower/ Kuala Lumpur (2016)

Designed with a geometrical diamond façade, implying a period where facade is integrated as part of the structural support.

Maybank Tower/ Kuala Lumpur (2016)

Designed with a geometrical diamond façade, implying a period where facade is integrated as part of the structural support.

Wisma Angkasapuri/ Kuala Lumpur (1968)

The building facade is ornamented with the repetition of precast shield-like concrete panels which installed onto the extended reinforcement bar for shading purpose.

Body

Body form enables view from 360° for different perceptions.

Flow

Split component simplifies the flow of mechanical movements.

Lighting

LED strip lighting enhances display experience.

Spacing

Spacing in between metal decks creates void for model display.

Both towers were designed to rotate in anti-clockwise direction with the maximum of 180 degree. The action of “push and pull” was purposely applied to achieve the meaning of the transformation of facade in old and new era.
